Your Toilet Keeps Running—How to Stop It Without Calling a Plumber (Yet)

Q

A constantly running toilet isn’t just an annoying background noise—it can also waste hundreds of gallons of water a day and spike your utility bill. The good news? You might be able to fix it yourself with just a few simple steps.

If your toilet won’t stop running and you’re wondering whether you need a plumber, try these quick fixes first—they could save you time, money, and stress.

What Causes a Toilet to Keep Running?

There are a few common reasons your toilet may be running non-stop:

  • A worn or misaligned flapper

  • A faulty fill valve

  • An improperly adjusted float

  • A leaky flush valve seat

These are all relatively inexpensive parts that wear out over time—especially in older toilets or those used frequently.

Step 1: Check the Flapper

The flapper is the rubber piece at the bottom of the tank that lifts when you flush. If it doesn’t seal properly, water will keep leaking into the bowl.

✅ What to do:

  • Turn off the water supply (under the toilet)

  • Remove the tank lid

  • Press down on the flapper—if the running stops, that’s your issue

  • If it’s worn or warped, replace it (they usually cost under $10)

Step 2: Adjust the Float

If the float sits too high, water can continuously overflow into the tank’s overflow tube.

✅ What to do:

  • Locate the float (it may be a ball or a cup-style)

  • Adjust it lower so the water stops about 1 inch below the overflow tube

  • Flush to test

Bonus Tip: Dye Test for Silent Leaks

Add a few drops of food coloring to your tank water and wait 15–20 minutes. If the color appears in the toilet bowl without flushing, your flapper or flush valve seat is leaking.

Step 3: Inspect the Fill Valve

If water is still running, the fill valve (the tall column on the left side of the tank) may be malfunctioning.

✅ What to do:

  • Look for cracks or signs of wear

  • Try gently tightening the valve’s cap

  • If it’s noisy or still running, it may need to be replaced (inexpensive at hardware stores)
